Description

Ahead of the 6th International Sclerochronology Conference in Tokyo (May 2023) and with support from conference organizers, several early-career sclerochronologists have banded together to organize an interim, virtual International Sclerochronology Conference (vISC) in September 2022 with a special focus on community networking and early-career research.

Sclerochronology is the study of physical and chemical variations in the accretionary hard tissues of organisms (e.g., shells, otoliths, corals, etc), and the temporal context in which they formed. With the wide array of archives and techniques, sclerochronology is used in a range of fields, including ecology, geophysics, archaeology, climate reconstruction, and environmental and fisheries sciences. We invite ALL current and aspiring sclerochronologists to participate!

There are no fees associated with this event - it is entirely free!

How to Register and Attend

This website is a home base for the vISC. Emails containing deadlines and major announcements will also be sent to interested participants. The website serves as the primary registration tool for the event and also as a community platform, thus, we require interested participants to become a website member (Step 1). Thereafter, you can register for the conference (Step 2) and, if you are an ECR, submit an abstract (Step 3).

If you encounter difficulties using this website or any of its features, please contact virtual.isc2022@gmail.com. You may also access the FAQ forum.

Step 1. Become a member

Create a website account (look for link in upper left corner OR you will be prompted when clicking on the Register page) to gain access to registration and abstract submission.

Your website account must be approved by a moderator before you can register for the conference. You will receive an email confirming when your account has been approved. You will not be able to change your login email address. Please check your spam folder if you don't receive confirmation email(s).

Step 2. Register to attend

Complete the Registration Form. This is a different form than what you completed in Step 1. Email updates will be sent to the email address you provided.

The sclerochronology community from all career stages, backgrounds, and professions are invited to participate in the event. Registered attendees will be able to access all event programming, including poster sessions, lightning talks, breakout sessions, plenaries, networking activities, and more.

Step 3 (optional). Submit an abstract

If you are an early-career researcher and would like to present a poster, complete the Abstract Submission Form (available on the "Register" page).

The poster sessions will feature early-career* researchers only. While the exact format of the program is still TBD, we expect to include a short lightning talk to accompany each poster presentation. We invite research on all topics from climate and ocean science, archaeology and human history, biology, mineralogy, and ecology, and other areas spanning the field of sclerochronology.

*For this event, we define early career as a student or researcher less than 5 years beyond their terminal degree, with consideration for career breaks and other circumstances.

Step 4. Mark your calendars

for 13-15 September. E-see you then!
